本句是it is/was...that...结构的强调句型，强调的是句子的时间状语。强调句可强调主语、宾语、状语等。
例：It was he who (that) read three books in the library yesterday. (强调主语)
It was three books that he read in the library yesterday. (强调宾语)
It was in the library that he read three books yesterday. (强调时间状语)
take hold抓住；扛着；固定下来。
例：It’s hard for him to take hold in the strange place. 他要立足于这个陌生的地方是很艰难的。
The newly planted vines quickly took hold. 新种下的葡萄藤很快就扎下了根。
2. I found English grammar dull and difficult. 我觉得英文语法枯燥难懂。
本句是“find+宾语+宾补”的结构，find之后，可接名词、形容词、现在分词和过去分词等作宾补，表示“发现……是某种状况，处于某种状态或在某个地方等”。
例：You’ll find it a difficult book. 你会发现它是一本难懂的书。
He found the room empty. 他发现房间是空的。
I went to her house but I found her out. 我到她家发现她不在家。
I found him standing at the door. 我发现他正站在门口。
3. He was said to be very formal, rigid and hopelessly out of date. 据说他拘谨刻板，完全落后于时代。
本句相当于It was said that he was very formal, rigid, and hopelessly out of date.
sb. is/was said to和it is/was said to两种句型可互换，可用于这两种句型的动词有：believe, report, prove, estimate, suppose等。
例：It is believed that health is above wealth. 一般人都相信健康重于财富。
He is believed to be the richest man in Europe. 他被公认为是欧洲的首富。
It is reported that the literacy rate is very low in the rural areas. 据报道这个地区的受教育率很低。
out of date过时的；过期的；废弃的。
例：This directory is helplessly out of date. 这本通讯地址录过时了，没有用。
His passport is out of date. 他的护照过期了。

现在分词flooding作方式或伴随状语，修饰came。

seat为及物动词，be seated表示“坐下，坐落于”，
例：The lecture won’t start until every last person is seated. 直到每一个人就座以后，演讲才开始。
seat也常用词组seat oneself，意为“使(自己)坐下”，
例：He waved toward a chair, and seated himself at the desk. 他朝一把椅子一挥手，在桌旁坐了下来。
5. To write it as I wanted… 照我希望的那样去写……
as引导方式状语从句，表示“按照，依照；如，正如”等意思。
例：Remember, you must do everything as I do. 记住，你们务必照我的样子去做每一件事。
6. There was no choice next morning but to turn in my tale of the Belleville supper. 第二天上午，我别无选择，只好把我为自己而写的贝尔维尔晚餐的故事交了上去。
There is no choice/alternative but to…, have no choice/alternative but to…是常用句型，表示“没有选择，只能…”，这里的to是动词不定式，不能省去。
例：We had no choice but to do what we were asked. 我们只得照要求的做了。
If you insist on your demand for a pay raise, I shall have no choice but to dismiss you. 如果您坚持要求增加工资，我就只好辞退您了。
There was no choice but to return.大家只得退回来。
